Great article Justin. It appears that O'Toole will have a high hill to climb if he is to defeat Trudeau. I would like your take on the numerous scandals that have hit the liberals and in particular Trudeau himself. They seem to be resurrecting again and should they become campaign bound how much will this hurt him and his Government from winning or achieving his coveted majority?
Thanks for reading, Rick. If you are to believe the polls, it appears Trudeau's recent missteps have yet to galvanize support behind the Conservatives. In fact, Trudeau's approval ratings remain higher than O'Toole's. But campaigns can introduce all kinds of unforeseen issues. We'll see! Thanks for commenting.
Hi Justin. Good article. It is unclear to me how O’Toole, “far from espousing fiscal restraint” and eager to pursue “ambitions national projects” can simultaneously “deliver traditional Tory-fare, like balancing the budget.”
Hi William -- thanks for your comment. I agree it is something of a paradox, but it is also something that is becoming more common in conservative platforms. That is, outlining a number of spending initiatives, but also stating you will balance the budget. While O'Toole has undoubtedly moved away from strict adherence of traditional conservative economic policy (on climate, etc) it doesn't mean he has completely abandoned it. It's a great question. I think you are correct about O’Toole’s strategy, but he risks losing many who voted for him as leader. He is counting on the fact that we presently have no alternative. Consequently my short opinion is: “we’re doomed”
Hi Don - thanks for your comment. Undoubtedly, expanding the 'big blue tent,' while keeping core Conservatives engaged seems to be a perennial challenge the Conservatives. But it is possible with the right approach! Thanks for reading.
Hi Doug - thanks for your comment. In terms of general sentiment, recent polling suggests that Canadians are increasingly satisfied with Trudeau's management of the pandemic. And you can expect those numbers to improve as people get vaccinated and the economy re-opens. At this juncture, the Liberals will likely campaign on their 'Build Back Better,' theme, which involves a $100 billion stimulus plan with a focus on green infrastructure. The Conservatives have responded with their own "Secure the Future" plan, which is a more modest approach that includes balancing the budget.
Great insight—I might even say a “stonking” article. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Cam!

Hi Justin, great article. I’d like to hear more on how the pandemic management by Liberals will affect the next election?

Nice take on next election. Hope to see more.
